Central Albertans will be able to see a partial lunar eclipse tonight (Sept. 17).

The partial lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere with a clear view of the eastern horizon.

The event begins at 8:12 p.m., it will be at its maximum at 8:44 p.m., and end at 9:15 p.m.

“The partial lunar eclipse means that the moon is partly going through Earth's shadow,” said Alice Koning, Head of interpretive services for the Waskasoo Environmental Education Society. “During a partial lunar eclipse, part of the moon is in shadow, and it looks like a bite has been taken out of the moon.”

The partial lunar eclipse isn’t the only special solar sighting tonight.

“When you go and look at the moon tonight, you're looking to the east, there will be a really bright star to the right of it,” Koning said. “That bright star is actually the planet Saturn.”

To celebrate the event, the Kerry Wood Nature Centre is hosting a walk and talk event through the sanctuary with an interpreter tonight (Sept. 17) from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
