Fall weather will soon have leaves and lawns turning amber. Agrologist Sherri Roberts says lawns must be properly prepared to weather winter conditions.

Roberts says there is a debate on whether to fertilize a lawn one last time in the fall. She mentions the type of fertilizer is what makes the difference.

“If you look at the research now, they're finding out that if you put down a nitrogen containing fertilizer in the fall, you're somewhat predisposing your lawn to snow mold. It's a fungal disease for those that aren't familiar with it. It looks like big round white spots in the springtime. It's not that difficult to deal with, but it does set your lawn back.”

Roberts says when looking at fertilizing in the fall, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels are most important to consider.

“You want to lower that nitrogen, and you want the P (phosphorus)and the K (potassium) to be high because those are for root development and heat and cold hardiness tolerance.”

Roberts also mentions protecting grass near walkways from deicers as they can be detrimental to lawn health. She recommends using sand instead of deicers, but measures can be taken regardless.

“Some of those deicers are really, really hard on your grass. If you go and you put a width of gypsum along the edge of the grass next to the sidewalk, that will help neutralize any ice melt that you might want to use.”

She suggests a heavy application of gypsum is best.

Roberts reminds gardeners that the season is not over yet, and there is still work to be done in maintaining lawns and gardens.

“Happy gardening, because we're not done yet. A frost has not hit the Weyburn area and as long as it hasn't, get some mums in the ground, plant some asters, give yourself some good fall color.”
