"Our infrastructure is facing a challenge of an unprecedented scale." That from Ike Friesen, Reeve for the R.M. of Stanley, in the most recent update provided by the Municipality following Monday's deluge of rain.

According to the Municipality, 7 to 8 inches fell in some areas within 24 hours, and officials say this record-breaking deluge has exposed the limitations of the area’s current drainage infrastructure. The existing infrastructure, including culverts, ditches, and other stormwater management systems, are being tested to their limit and in some cases, beyond.

Because the RM of Stanley’s drainage systems were constructed based on historical weather patterns and anticipated rainfall levels, they weren't designed to handle the volume of rain that came down earlier this week are now under intense strain, resulting in isolated flooding, predominantly in the eastern part of the municipality, affecting homes, roads and agricultural lands.

"The volume of rain we've received in such a short time has severely strained our drainage systems," said Friesen. "We are actively working to assess the damage and provide support to those affected."

In response to what the Municipality is calling a crisis, public works crews are working diligently to mitigate the impact of the flooding. Efforts are underway to clear blocked drainage pathways, manage standing water, and provide relief to affected residents.
