With school back in session, the Weyburn Police Service continues to monitor and maintain safety in school zones. This extends to ensuring students are transported safely to and from school

Sergeant Shane St. John offers safety reminders regarding driving around school busses. He says many people hold the misconception that only one lane of traffic must stop for a school bus stop sign.

“When they stop with the stop sign out, that's both lanes of traffic in both directions that have to stop. We see a lot of people in the outside lane keep going through. The whole purpose of that stop sign is to stop both lanes of traffic in case a kid darts across the road in front of the bus. It's so important to stop.”

Sgt St. John says failing to stop will result in being fined $230.

From September 9th through 15th the Weyburn Police Service responded to 85 calls for service. A total of 39 charges were laid with four under the Criminal Code of Canada, 14 under the Traffic Safety Act, and one for failure to attend court.
