A black bear was spotted in Okotoks last night (Sept. 17).

A few Okotokians posted videos of the bear to Facebook, including Leslee Horniachek, whose security camera captured footage of the black bear walking across her front lawn and a driveway in the Westmount neighbourhood at 2:48 a.m.

According to Horniachek, she initially thought it was a prank when she first saw the bear on her camera.

"So, I went to the front window and looked outside, and sure enough there's a bear meandering down the road, heading east on Westmount Way going down the hill," Horniachek explains. "I phoned the non-emergency line and the lady took down some information."

After that, Horniachek says the bear made its way down to Westmount School.

Once she got to Westmount Crescent, Horniachek said the RCMP arrived to help out with the bear.

She says she did not see the bear touch any garbage bins, even though it was the night before garbage day and bins were lining the streets.

But, according to the Town of Okotoks, the animal has not been seen since then.

Horniachel says she has lived in Okotoks for almost 30 years, and this is the first time she has seen a bear in town.

If anyone spots a bear in town, they are asked to call either the RCMP or Fish and Wildlife.

The Town of Okotoks also has tips and information for bear encounters on their website.
