The Government of Alberta is touting more investments in the province's film and television industry this year.
In a release from September 18, they highlighted investments made through three grant streams under the Alberta Made Screen Industries Program.
That includes the Project/Script Development Grant, which has seen nearly $1 million provided to 62 approved projects so far this year. The grant is intended to support Alberta's writers, directors, and producers in the early stages of their projects.
The Post-Production, Visual Effects and Digital Animation Grant has also provided $181,000 to 24 post-production companies. This grant stream is aimed at productions in their later stages. It has provided $2.9 million to 511 projects since it was expanded in 2023.
Nearly $1 million in grants have supported 11 productions so far this year through the Alberta Made Production Grant. The Province estimates that every dollar invested through the program sees a 400 per cent return in investments back into the province.
Since its introduction in 2020, the Alberta Made Production Grant has provided funding to 117 productions for a total of $7.7 million, with an estimated $31 million having been spent in Alberta as a result.
The provincial government has also committed $90,000 for 2024 and 2025 for Alberta's largest film festival, the Calgary International Film Festival.
Among the major projects filming in Alberta this year are the Netflix series' The Abandons and My Life With the Walter Boys, and a mini-series about the JonBenét Ramsey case titled UCC: JBR Project
A couple of major film productions, Howl and Die, My Love are also currently in production in Alberta.
