The Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) football team went toe to toe with the Delisle Rebels on Friday night, but a late 14-point surge from the Rebels in the final 2:30 was the difference, as the Rebels defeated the Mohawks 56-42 in a game that was played under the lights at Glenn Hall Park.
The Rebels opened the scoring with a touchdown run by running back Luke Gessell.
Humboldt wasted very little time to answer back, on the ensuing kickoff Barrett Smith returned it for a touchdown with the Mohawks tying the game.
Later in the quarter, HCI had a chance to grab their first lead, but following a dropped pass in the end zone, and a botched snap on the field goal attempt, the Mohawks were left empty handed.
Delisle would make Humboldt pay for their mistake with Gessell picking up his second touchdown on the ground.
In the second quarter, the Mohawks tied the game with a touchdown reception from Steven Engele.
Gessell continued his impressive game on the ground with a 56-yard touchdown run, as the Rebels pulled ahead for the third time in the first half.
Humboldt would draw even before the end of the second quarter when Smith picked up his second touchdown of the game.
While the Rebels led the first half, the Mohawks would gain control in the second half when Quarterback Liam Zimmerman reached the endzone on the ground, as HCI moved ahead for the first time of the game.
The Rebels tied the game, but the momentum would swing back into the advantage after they forced a turnover on downs inside of Delisle territory. On the next play, Engele scored his second touchdown as HCI regained the lead.
Delisle’s Vlad McTavish scored his second touchdown to tie the game.
Both team’s leading scorers traded points, with Smith finding the endzone for the third time, before Gessell scored his fourth touchdown, to tie the game at 42-42.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Rebels capitalized on a blocked punt, with a touchdown plunge from quarterback Sam Keilo.
Gazelle added his fifth touchdown of the game for insurance, with Delisle improving their record to 3-0.
With the loss, the Mohawks fell to 1-2.
This week HCI will travel to Kindersley, to meet the Kobras for their second matchup of the year. The Mohawks defeated the Kobras 51-12 in the first game of the year on September 6.
