Eden Foundation's Commitment to Mental Health
Dave Sawatsky, Director of Development at Eden Foundation, recently joined us to talk about their ongoing efforts in supporting mental health through various community initiatives. Dave emphasized the importance of Eden's work, saying, "Eden is a fantastic organization, strong leadership, really doing good work... It’s exciting to be part of an organization that is, in their own way, trying to change the world for the better." His passion for contributing to the cause reflects the foundation's dedication to providing essential mental health services.
Success of the Head for the Hills Event
Recently, Eden Foundation hosted its "Head for the Hills" event, marking Dave’s first experience leading such a fundraiser. The event was a huge success, thanks to the overwhelming community support. Dave shared, "We had around 180 riders come out and raise just over 100K... really thankful for the community and the support of the folks who are riding." The foundation is thrilled by the positive turnout and hopes to make this event a long-standing tradition.
With the success of the Head for the Hills behind them, Eden Foundation now turns its focus to the upcoming Ride for Recovery of Hope in Winnipeg. This 30-kilometer ride will follow scenic trails and bike paths, departing from Fort Garry MB Church. Dave envisions this event growing just like their other fundraisers, noting, "We want our Ride for Recovery of Hope to grow into something like [Head for the Hills], a well-established annual event that everybody knows about and is excited for."
Supporting Accessible Mental Health Services
A significant aspect of the Ride for Recovery of Hope is its purpose: raising funds for Eden's sliding fee scale program. Dave explained, "If they can’t access [counseling] because they can’t afford it, then that’s a problem... The sliding fee scale program allows folks to pay an amount that’s tied to what they can." This initiative ensures that individuals, couples, and families can access the mental health services they need, regardless of financial barriers.
Eden Foundation operates through three key hubs in Winkler, Steinbach, and Winnipeg, with plans to grow their presence in each location. Dave highlighted their vision, stating, "We want to have a strong presence in each location... build up visibility and awareness of Eden and the good work that they're doing." By hosting events like the Ride for Recovery of Hope, Eden is raising both funds and awareness for their vital work across Manitoba.
How to Get Involved
Dave encourages the community to participate in the Ride for Recovery of Hope, even if they aren’t able to cycle. "Whether you're a rider or not, you can still participate... You can donate straight from our website without having to ride or get out that bicycle," he shared. The foundation relies on the generosity of Manitobans to continue offering critical mental health services.
