Monday night, Airdrie Special Olympics held a fundraising event at Boston Pizza called "Cops, Pops and Pizza."

Staff Sgt. Ryan with the Southern Alberta RCMP, who is also the chairperson for the Calgary region Special Olympics, spoke to DiscoverAirdrie and explained athletes and police officers were working with servers at Boston Pizza to collect donations that would help send local athletes to provincial events for certain sports.

Sue Farkas-Fillatre, the Media Relations Coordinator for Airdrie Special Olympics, explained what it means to see their athletes out and about interacting with Airdronians.

"Just getting the exposure, getting out there and seeing people and just getting a chance to be part of the community and show everybody what Special Olympic Airdrie is all about is important."

According to Farkas-Fillatre, a total of $1503 was raised from their time at Boston Pizza.

Singleton explained being able to help the community and create relationships with local groups like Airdrie Special Olympics is important.

"It also provides a very valuable positive side of policing. It's very enjoyable for us to come and help."

Catriona Le May Doan, an Olympic speed skater champion, was also present to help fundraise for the athletes.

Emma, a local swimmer and golfer with Airdrie Special Olympics, shared why she liked attending this event.

"You get to do something you usually don't get to do, and you get to meet new people."

When asked if people should try Special Olympics, she shared why it's a good idea.

"It's very inclusive, everyone is nice, and they will help you if you need it!"
