The Alberta government is refocusing the province's health care system.

With the new health care system, Albertans are expecting improved outcomes and performance, including consistent, appropriate, and efficient care for all, across different sectors.

While they are refocusing the health care system, the government has created a Seamless Patient Experience Review, which will help to ensure that patients are still the priority while new provincial health agencies become operational.

The Seamless Patient Experience Review is going to be led by Dr. Lyle Oberg, who has experience and expertise in health care delivery.

Dr. Oberg will provide recommendations to the Integration Council on how to implement a seamless patient experience in the new refocused system.

"When we began refocusing the health care system, we said that improving the patient journey would be at the centre of this work," explained Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange in a media release. "I am confident Dr. Oberg will provide insightful recommendations that will support the overall efforts to improve health care for all Albertans."

During the process, Dr. Oberg will be consulting with a range of health care professionals who work in the four main sectors that represent the new provincial health agencies.

Those are primary care, acute care, continuing care, and Recovery Alberta.

Dr. Oberg will also work alongside the Ministry of Health, Alberta Health Services, the Health Quality Council of Alberta, and new provincial health agency leaders to help make recommendations to the Integration Council.

While creating an interim report to support the launch of the new health agencies, which will be presented in December, Dr. Oberg will be reporting to the Minister of Health, Adiana LeGrange.

The final report with Dr. Oberg's recommendations will be presented to the Integration Council in March 2025.

In order for Dr. Oberg to focus on this report, a new chair has been appointed to Alberta Health Services, with Angela Fong taking over that role.

The report will include how service providers can deliver consistent, appropriate, and seamless care between providers, how provincial health authorities integrate patient care, and more.
