The Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) Mohawks are experiencing the tough grind of the football season.
Last week, the Mohawks fell to 1-2 on the season with a spirited 56-42 loss to the Delisle Rebels, who moved to 3-0 on the year.
Despite the loss, Mohawks head coach Eric Anderson felt there were a lot of positives for his team despite the defeat.
“Honestly, it was one of the better nine-man games that I’ve been a part of.”
Anderson added, “Our guys left it all out there, and there’s did too, we’re battered and bruised, kind of hope their guys are the same. We’re looking forward to seeing them again next week.”
Going forward, Anderson feels the biggest key for the Mohawks is to stay healthy, as he noted the team was without several players to begin practice this week.
“We’re just going to have to get that more efficient out there, we’re going have to dig deep. There weren’t a lot of breaks for a lot of guys and I think it’s going to be a very similar situation when we go into Delisle, guys are just going have to put the team on their back and we’re going have to have everyone ready to jump in if needed, so everyone is going have to be physically and mentally prepared.”
Before the Mohawks get another crack at the Rebels, they will travel to Kindersley on Friday to meet the Kobras.
The two teams opened the season in Humboldt on September 6, with the Mohawks picking up a convincing 51-12 win. Anderson hopes the Mohawks can rebound this week.
“I’m hoping we can get a lot of guys involved this week and I’m hoping we can play a solid game against Kindersley, hopefully it’s a happy drive back.”
There will also be football action on Saturday at Glenn Hall Park, as the Mohawks will be hosting their junior football jamboree. Grade 9 & 10 players, who normally don’t get an opportunity to play, will take part in a series of games against other teams in the province.
The junior football jamboree will go from 9-4.
