The Exchange District will soon be home to a new art installation that can also be used for skateboarding.
The Exchange District BIZ announced this week the unveiling of Skate Spot, a new permanent skateboarding sculpture in Old Market Square
Skate Spot was created by skaters, for skaters as a piece of "skateable furniture." The hope is that it will inspire creativity in those who use it.
"Early skateboarding culture in Winnipeg found a home at Old Market Square, and we’re excited to give the new generation a great reason to come back,” said David Pensato, Exchange District BIZ executive director. “Skate Spot was designed by people in the community to be a little bit different from what’s currently available in Winnipeg. It’s a little more ‘street’ and a little less formal, which fits the Exchange District perfectly. It also has some great visual appeal as a sculpture, whether you skate it or use it as a selfie prop."
The piece has been designed for skateboarders of all levels, and when not in use, it doubles as a sculpture.
Skate Spot, located behind the Cube Stage, will be officially unveiled on Saturday, Sept. 28 during Nuit Blanche.
