As the 48th Annual Estevan United Way Telethon approaches, organizers are extending a unique opportunity for students in grades 5 to 8 to get involved behind the scenes. This year’s theme, "YOU ARE THE COMMUNITY," emphasizes inclusivity, and United Way Estevan President Mark Pettitt says this new initiative will allow younger participants to contribute in meaningful ways.

“This year we decided that not only are we going to have the schools performing on stage and filling the hall with all their family, we've invited students grades 5 to 8 to participate by either hosting or maybe behind-the-camera jobs, with stage managing, or doing sound,” Pettitt explained. “The kids are going to put together a 30-second video, a little audition about their skills, talents, enthusiasm, what they know about United Way, why they want to get involved... and we're going to select and have some kids involved this year in a different way than we've ever had before.”

Youth involvement has long been a hallmark of the Estevan United Way Telethon. High school students traditionally take over the event during the overnight hours, providing fun and entertainment while keeping the momentum of the telethon going. Pettitt praised the dedication of the Estevan Comprehensive School group, saying, “The ECS group comes in at midnight, and they go strong right till 6 in the morning. They're amazing with what they come up with for entertainment, and it's just a fun way to get youth involved because a lot of our work involves youth, and we think it's important to have them involved in our telethon.”

Students interested in participating can access audition information through their schools. For additional inquiries, contact the United Way Estevan office at 306-634-7375.

The 48th Annual United Way Estevan Telethon will take place on October 18 and 19, offering 33 hours of live entertainment, fundraising, and community spirit.
