With recent cougar activity in the Foothills, residents are asked to keep watch and stay safe.
Foothill County stated in a recent release that with the cool temperatures making a presence, predator activity can increase.
Two recent incidents involved cougars attacking family pets, with one resulting in the death of a house cat.
Some tips from the County to make sure you are safe in case of a mountain lion in the area include, being cautious during the dawn and dusk hours as that is when wildlife is most active, making noise to alert a cougar or other dangerous predators to give awareness of your presence, keeping children and pets close by, and carrying bear spray when you are outside.
If you run into a cougar or predator, do not approach the animal, but rather retreat slowly while facing the animal.
Do not run or play dead, pick up any pets or children, and try to appear bigger while holding up your arms or an object above your head.
Cougar sightings can be reported to Fish and Wildlife at (403) 932-2385.
