Airdrie has a vibrant local music scene, and one of its standout talents is Edwardson, an alternative pop artist with deep roots in the community.
Recently, Edwardson shared his journey with Discover Airdrie, reflecting on how his hometown shaped his music.
“I was born and raised here,” he said. “I sort of got my musical start here as well.”
Living just a couple of blocks from George Mac High School, he recalls fond memories of walking to the Plainsman Arena for hockey and the time spent at Tower Lane Mall, which used to be an indoor hub of activity, he said.
“It was like a classic 90s mall. Oh, it was the best.”
Edwardson's musical journey began playing in church with his family, and his school years were filled with talent shows and local bands.
“Airdrie just presented so many opportunities,” he noted, “The switch to then go solo and start writing my own stuff was pretty easy.”
Edwardson is excited to share his latest single, “Blame,” which captures the complex emotions of difficult relationships.
“I feel like all of us have been in a relationship that is hard to leave. We know we should, and we end up kicking ourselves for going back over and over again.”
The single follows Edwardson’s 2023 debut EP, Twenty Something, which included tracks like “Get Home,” “Oh Love,” and an updated version of the debut single “Springtime.” According to the media release, the EP gained traction in the indie pop scene across Calgary and Canada, solidifying Edwardson as a rising artist to watch.
His musical journey developed during the pandemic, leading him to develop a distinct sound.
“Ultimately, what came out of that was this fun poppy sound. My goal is music that you can dance to, but the lyrics are heartbreaking.”
Support from his family has been crucial, crediting them for his determination to pursue music despite the challenges.
“My parents were very much about following your dream, even if it's hard, even if it's difficult, make it work.”
Edwardson has built a loyal fanbase through consistent live performances and engagement with listeners online. In 2024, Edwardson was nominated for the Emerging Artist of the Year award at the YYC Music Awards, which are taking place this weekend at the Grey Eagle Event Centre.
Edwardson remains connected to the local Airdrie music community.
“It’s been such a good time and such an honour to grow in this city and do music here.”
For fans wanting to dive into his music, “Blame” is available on major streaming platforms, and its music video premiered today on YouTube.
