The Winkler Skating Club encourages local families to get their kids involved in the CanSkate program—a fun and engaging way for children to learn how to skate. Charmaine Ens, from the club, recently shared why CanSkate is a great opportunity for kids in Winkler and why every child should try it.

What is the CanSkate Program?

CanSkate is a beginner skating program open to kids as young as four. It teaches the basics of skating, helping them build balance, coordination, and confidence on the ice. Ens explained that skating is a big part of Canadian life, and it’s important for kids to learn how to do it right.

“Every Canadian should know how to skate properly,” Ens said. "There’s a big difference between skating and falling!"

Skating is more than just a fun activity—it’s also a great way to stay active, especially during the winter. And for kids who want to keep going, CanSkate is the stepping stone to StarSkate, where they can learn advanced skills and even compete.

Why Sign Up for CanSkate?

There are a few good reasons to sign your kids up for CanSkate:

  1. Learn a life skill: Skating is something every Canadian should know, and CanSkate makes learning fun.

  2. Stay active: Skating is a great way to keep kids moving in the winter months.

  3. Cultural connection: For families new to Winkler or Canada, it’s a great way to introduce kids to a big part of local life.

  4. Boost confidence: The program helps kids feel comfortable and confident on the ice.

  5. Open doors: Skating can lead to other ice sports like hockey or figure skating.

"We’ve had a lot of newcomers signing up this year," said Ens. "It’s great to see them learning how to skate and getting involved in Canadian culture."

CanSkate Registration Details

Registration for CanSkate has been open for a bit, but there are still spots available for the Wednesday sessions. These run from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. at the Icon Arena in Winkler. The program starts on October 7 and runs until March 1, wrapping up with an end-of-season ice show where the kids can show off what they’ve learned.

“The kids love showing off their new skills,” Ens said, adding that she sews the costumes for the event herself. It’s a fun way to end the season, and families love seeing how far their kids have come.

How to Register for CanSkate

If you want to sign your child up for CanSkate, just visit the Winkler Skating Club’s website at winklerskatingclub.uplifterinc.com or search "Winkler Skating Club" on Google. You can easily register for the Wednesday sessions through the site.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Winkler Skating Club is also looking for volunteers to help with the end-of-season ice show and other club events. Volunteers can help with things like decorations, managing the kids, or even emceeing the event.

"We’re always looking for extra hands," Ens said. "There’s lots of ways to get involved."

Whether you’re a parent signing up your child or someone who wants to help out, the club could use your support.
