Central Station’s popular "Locked on the roof" event is back this October, featuring a showdown between the Winkler Fire Department and the Winkler Flyers. With a fun twist and a mission, the event aims to raise $20,000 to fight poverty in Winkler. Here's what you need to know.
What is Fire vs. Ice?
On October 4th, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., the Winkler Flyers and the Winkler Fire Department will be "locked" on the roof of Central Station Community Centre (555 Main Street). The first team to raise $10,000 will come down, with all donations going toward poverty reduction efforts.
In addition to the rooftop challenge, the public is invited to watch three rounds of friendly competition between the teams at 4:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. Organizers promise that while there won’t be any fighting, the challenges will test each team’s skills—and there could be some surprises!
What to Expect at the Event
The event is family-friendly and includes food vendors offering a Taco in a Bag drive-thru, Alice’s Community Coffee, mini doughnuts, and cotton candy. For kids (and kids at heart), there’s a firefighter experience, complete with a chance to sit in the fire truck and snap a photo wearing a fire helmet.
Additionally, fans of the Winkler Flyers can get a shout-out from their favorite player by making a donation. Videos will be shared on social media, adding an extra element of fun and community involvement.
Why It Matters
Central Station’s executive director, Anita Wiebe, highlights the importance of the fundraiser. “Poverty in Winkler may not always be visible, but it exists,” said Wiebe. “This event is about bringing our community together to support those in need. We’re all responsible for taking care of our neighbours.”
Krista Rempel, Community Development Coordinator at Central Station, stressed the event's significance: “Events like Fire vs. Ice are not just about raising funds; they’re about building community spirit. We want people to come out, have fun, and see that they can make a difference in someone’s life. Every donation, no matter the size, helps us provide vital services to those struggling with food insecurity and poverty in Winkler. It’s important for everyone to know that their involvement truly matters, whether they’re donating, enjoying food, or simply cheering on their favourite team.”
Central Station has long been at the forefront of community support in Winkler. Their work includes providing food through the Winkler Food Cupboard, organizing community meals, and offering resources to those facing financial hardship.
How You Can Support Fire vs. Ice
Donations can be made in person at the event or online via Central Station’s website, where you can choose to support either the Winkler Flyers or the Winkler Fire Department. The goal is to raise $20,000, with $10,000 per team.
“Events like this help us keep programs running that directly address poverty in our community,” Wiebe added. “It’s not just about raising money; it’s about raising awareness and bringing people together.”
Whether you’re grabbing a Taco in a Bag, cheering on your favourite team, or making an online donation, every bit of support counts.
