Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary has announced the sad news that Kuna, the very first wolfdog and inspiration behind the Sanctuary has passed away.

“Kuna was actually the reason behind why this place is here,” says Alyx Harris, the operations manager of the Sanctuary.

The fifteen-and-a-half-year-old wolfdog passed away peacefully on September 17th.

“It was really hard to say goodbye to such a big member and a big part of what we do.”

“Our founder and executive director, Georgina [De Caigny], when she was about 19 years old, she got her very first wolfdog, and that was Kuna. Kuna was about 10 weeks old and a high-content wolfdog puppy, meaning she was mostly wolf.”

“Georgina had to really changed her entire life around in order to give Kuna the life that she deserved and it's what actually inspired her to start up Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. So it's definitely the end of an era without a doubt.”

Kuna was with the Sanctuary as it grew from her being the only wolfdog, all the way to the 58 that currently call it home.

Harris says the Sanctuary has been flooded with condolences and love for Kuna since making the announcement on social media.

“Everyone that's been supporting us through this, there's been a really big outreach. Everyone who was impacted by her and it's really lovely to get to hear people's stories on how she did impact so many people.”

The Sanctuary also has Kuna Kummunity, a monthly donor program for the community to make contributions to the non-profit.
