Although most people start winterizing their campers preparing for the upcoming cooler weather, fall camping is still available at provincial parks throughout Saskatchewan including Moose Mountain Provincial Park. With this weekend most likely being the last hot weekend of the year, it’s a perfect time to head out to the provincial parks and enjoy a quieter camping experience. A sentiment that Moose Mountain Provincial Parks manager Kim Brown agrees with wholeheartedly.
“Fall is the perfect time for me to camp. It's just such a beautiful, serene area. Beautiful fall colors and it's just it's a lot quieter. So, you just really get to enjoy the nature for sure. We've had fall camping primarily from Labour Day till September 30th. Our water does shut off on September 30th, but here at Moose Mountain, we do still have access to our water station where you could fill your camper tank and also be provided power.”
Most provincial parks do have some form of fall camping, according to a release by the Government of Saskatchewan, however, most don’t take advantage of it due to the cooling temperatures and less features and events being held. Although, some private groups take in the fall scene, such as Nordic dryland camps and some scouts.
For those looking for a more rugged adventure, Moose Mountain Provincial Park has been working throughout the year on backcountry camping. Developing 2 new campsites on their cross-country trails, adding bear boxes and shelters as well as waste-diverting toilets to provide what Brown states, is a more down-to-earth camping experience.
“Hopefully, we have hikers and canoers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers that come to utilize those areas and we're just really looking forward to it and trying to start working on signage and our communication plan. So, we see this is the perfect opportunity for those park visitors that want a little bit more rugged and adventurous camping experience to come enjoy nature in itself. We'll have definitely more to come for next summer coming up, but we're really excited to have this.”
Those campsites are expected to be ready by next summer, however this fall provides a perfect opportunity to head to the provincial parks and soak up the last little bit of warm weather and sunshine before winter inevitably rolls into Saskatchewan.
