Around 1200 residents received free food from the Calgary Guru Nanak Free Kitchen and the local Sikh community on Sunday.
Residents in need were able to stop by the Northcott Prairie School parking lot and fill up their grocery bags with different types of food that they were offering like fresh produce, canned goods and much more.
Airdronian Sandeep Singh, a volunteer with the kitchen, explained they arrived in the parking lot around 9:30 a.m. to set up and be ready for when Airdroninas arrived around noon.
"We finished around 3 p.m. and had two semi-trucks full of food for people to take."
The kitchen has handed out free food to Airdronians before, this was the first time they surpassed the 1000-person mark.
"We were able to let everybody know ahead of time where we were going to be, so I think it helped reach more people."
According to Singh, to show their appreciation for letting them use the parking lot, they donated food to the school for the kids to snack on. That included muffins, bananas and apples.
He went on to talk about what it feels like to help his fellow Airdronians in a possible time of need.
"I feel very grateful. It is amazing to see everybody smile when they come and get food. I hope we can help more people."
Singh mentioned they hope they could start hosting this event every month, He also hopes they can start donating more food to schools to make sure all the kids have food to eat as well.
He also wanted to thank the residents who brought food for the volunteers to eat while handing out food to those in need.
The last time the Guru Nanak Free Kitchen was in Airdrie was in July when it served around 800 Airdronians.
