Airdrie councillor Tina Petrow will stay in her role as Director for Cities of up to 500,000 within Alberta Municipalities for another two years.
Petrow, who just passed her one-year mark as a director, explained what Alberta Municipalities is all about.
"They represent over 300 municipalities in the province, including Airdrie and bring their issues to the forefront with the province."
After being appointed to the board last year, she was also appointed to the Safe and Healthy Community Committee which helps handle social type issues like housing, homelessness, mental health, addiction and senior care.
"I was also appointed to be the Alberta Municipalities representative on the Seniors Lodge Review Panel with the Government of Alberta, and I was appointed as the representative for the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Steering Committee."
Petrow went on to talk about how her role as director has helped her see what problems other communities are dealing with, not just Airdrie.
"I've got to travel a little bit more around the province and get to see other municipalities. How is it similar to Airdrie? What can I bring back to Airdrie that I've learned from these other communities? It's been great to go and see these things firsthand instead of reading about them somewhere."
Heading into her second year, Petrow hopes to continue to learn how communities deal with issues and see if it can benefit Airdrie in any way and vice versa.
"I know as a council, Airdrie City Council does a wonderful job of advocacy work with the provincial government and with the federal government. This is just one more way to get Airdrie's voice at the table and maybe different tables that we wouldn't be at."
At the end of September was the 2024 ABMunis Convention in Red Deer and multiple Airdrie delegates councillor Heather Spearman, Petrow and Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown attended.
"I think a common theme that I heard in all of the meetings that I sat in was that Airdrie is being talked about when we're not there in a very positive way. So our needs and our concerns, I feel, are finally being heard and being acknowledged."
Petrow also credited that her new role has also helped her grow as a councillor for Airdrie and advocate more for Airdronians.
