Over the weekend, Volunteer Airdrie took to the ditches for their annual Highway 567 Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup Campaign.
Dave Maffitt, past Chair of Volunteer Airdrie, spoke to DiscoverAirdrie about how he thought he might have had to cancel it.
"I was thinking as late as Thursday evening that I was going to have to cancel this year's cleanup because we only had two people confirmed at that point. I was quite relieved and quite gratified that we had another eight volunteers step up in the last 48 hours."
With a smaller group than usual, Volunteer Airdrie was able to cover 10-12 kilometres of Highway and pick up around 40 bags of garbage.
The highway Volunteer Airdrie is responsible for is Highway 567, west of Airdrie, just past 24th Street to Range Road 20.
This was the 10th annual highway cleanup. The section of highway that Volunteer Airdrie cleans has signage in both directions stating they maintain the ditches.
Daria Skibington-Roffel, Chair of Volunteer Airdrie, is thankful Airdronians stepped up so they could do their annual event.
"It shows the Airdrie volunteer spirit that people are willing to come together to support a good cause to keep our roads clean because they see that it's an important thing to do."
According to Maffitt, Alberta Highways is responsible for picking up the bags from the cleanup. He also wanted to thank Michael Jackson and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for using their parking lot to get organized for the cleanup.
Back at the beginning of May, Volunteer Airdrie did their first highway cleanup of the year along the QEII throughout Airdrie. Twenty-four local volunteers dedicated their Saturday morning to the annual Alberta Highways highway cleanup campaign.
In about three and a half hours, the group collected about 110 bags of litter, which was successful.
