Autumn is in full swing, and the leaves are changing and beginning to fall.
With autumn comes shorter days, which impacts visibility and driving conditions.
Because of that, the Okotoks RCMP are reminding drivers to remain vigilant and help keep pedestrians safe.
In a media release from October 2, the Okotoks RCMP reminds drivers to be mindful, particularly in school or playground zones and especially during early mornings or late afternoons when there are kids making their way to school.
They are also reminding drivers to follow the speed limit to ensure their vehicles can stop quickly and safely as needed.
If vehicles are stopped at crosswalks, it's not a good idea to pass them because there may be a pedestrian crossing that's just out of view.
Crosswalks exist at all intersections, whether they are marked or not, and drivers must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
The RCMP also suggest that drivers make eye contact with pedestrians at intersections and make sure they have fully left the crosswalk before proceeding,
They are also offering tips to pedestrians to help keep them safe while out for a walk.
On top of following the rules of the road and obeying all posted signs and signals, the RCMP suggests pedestrians try and always cross at marked crosswalks whenever possible.
If a crosswalk is not available, it's advised to find a well-lit area with a good view of traffic and only cross when it is safe to do so.
When crossing the street, make sure that all vehicles have stopped prior to entering the crosswalk and that you are visible to the motorists.
If no sidewalk is present, and walking on the street is necessary, it's best to walk facing traffic and to remain as far from traffic as possible.
While walking in the dark or during periods of low visibility, high-visibility clothing or gear is recommended.
Since June, the Okotoks RCMP have investigated four pedestrian collisions involving vehicles.
