The streets of Winnipeg will be filled with prayer on Saturday, as part of a city-wide prayer drive that has been happening annually for 18 years.

The idea for the drive came out of a Why Encounter event in 1986, an evangelistic initiative that saw 1.3 million copies of Why Am I On This Earth? delivered door-to-door from Halifax to Vancouver Island. After the success of that event, its founder, Ann Wiens, prayed for a new project, and that’s when the idea for the prayer drive was born.

“Some people are never prayed for, and we don’t know what’s happening in those homes—but God does,” says Wiens. “We’ve provided 107 maps, and people drive along the streets, praying for the residents with a lot of excitement.”

This Saturday, October 5, participants are invited to pick up a map and join in, either in person or virtually, praying for each home along the route.

Wiens, who strongly believes in the power of prayer, shares, “We’re connected with the Creator of the universe, and anything is possible for Him. As we drive and pray, God can make a difference in people’s lives. There’s so much heartache, and we use scriptures and prayers as we go.”

While most maps have already been distributed, a few are still available across the city. Those interested can email Ann at annwiens@mts.net or reach her on her cell at 204-795-7647.

“Prayer is the most beautiful gift we can give, whether for Christians or non-Christians,” Wiens says. “It’s powerful.”
