Members of the Prairie Patchworkers Quilt Guild are ready to show the fruits of their labour this weekend.
The Humboldt Quilt Show, “From Bolts to Bindings” will happen at the Bella Vista Inn on Friday (10 am-8 pm) and Saturday (10 am –4pm).
Loretta McDonald from the Prairie Patchworkers Guild says the show which happens every two years, gives members a chance to showcase an assortment of items.
“It can be various things from quilts that they have completed to bags, anything that requires two pieces of fabric coming together with some padding in between and that can be displayed. It can be a useful item in your home, can be a wearable item or could be something that keeps you warm.”
There will also be door prizes, a dutch auction and raffles for quilts.
There are 25 members of the Prairie Patchworkers Quilt Guild, with most of them based in Humboldt. Some members are former residents of the community but still remain connected to the group.
McDonald says the skill level of the group ranges from beginners to expertise, but they have fun working together.
“We certainly learn from each other, while having a lot of fun socializing together.”
There are a few goals the organization strives to attain according to McDonald, she noted since its inception in 2002, the Prairie Patchworkers Quilt Guild promote and preserve the art of quilting. Another big part of the group is the charity and outreach work that they do.
“We provide quilts and various items to things like mental health, Ronald McDonald House, group homes, quilts for survivors, women’s shelters, cancer patients, shut ins in the community, the list goes on.”
McDonald noted in the past they have donated over 200 quilts in a year.
Fabric for the charity quilts come from private donations, and grants from the Good Neighbour Store and Sask. Lotteries.
The Prairie Patchworkers Quilt Guild welcomes new members at any time, they meet on the first Thursday of the month, with the option of joining via Facebook messenger. Members also meet on Wednesdays, to do charity work and discuss ideas. A membership fee is required.
