A man is dead following a confrontation in the hallways of an apartment building in the city's North End on Wednesday afternoon.
The Winnipeg Police Service says that around 12:30 p.m., North District General Patrol officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man armed with edged weapons at a building in the 800 block of Main Street.
Acting Chief Art Stannard emphasized that all reports consisted of people saying the man was swinging an edged weapon and banging on different doors.
When officers arrived, they confronted the armed man in a hallway, leading to the use of a taser and the discharge of a firearm. The suspect, who was found to be carrying two edged weapons, was provided immediate emergency medical care but later succumbed to his injuries after being transported to hospital.
“These members are dedicated police officers who did not ever want to take a life,” Stannard said at a press conference on Wednesday evening. “They reacted to the actions of this person, and they are in the critical incident program. We will support them.” He explained that the program removes officers from duty for at least three days and ensures they receive wellness support.
No members of the public were harmed during the incident. Stannard also stressed that public safety had been at risk throughout the confrontation.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is now handling the investigation.
