The Winnipeg Jets have introduced a new Ukrainian Heritage logo ahead of the new NHL season.

The logo was designed by Andrii Sobchuk, a native of Lutsk, Ukraine, who moved to Canada with his family to continue his graphic design career with True North Sports + Entertainment after the war began in 2022, the club says in a release.

Sobchuk’s design incorporates geometric patterns from traditional Ukrainian embroidery, often featured on the sleeves of vyshyvankas (embroidered shirts) and rushnyks (ceremonial towels). The logo includes eight-pointed stars, known as mallows, which represent the balance of masculine and feminine energies and the harmony present in the universe.

Instead of the traditional red, black, and white associated with Ukrainian embroidery, Sobchuk has used blue and yellow to reflect the colours of the Ukrainian flag. These colours symbolize the sky and wheat fields, which hold significant meaning in both Manitoba and Ukrainian culture. The Ukrainian Coat of Arms is integrated into the logo, emphasizing Ukrainian national identity and cultural heritage while highlighting the contributions of the Ukrainian community in Manitoba.

Sobchuk stated, “I’ve discovered my passion for designing in the sports industry, especially for the Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose. It’s an honour to design the logo for Ukrainian Heritage Night and to share the vibrant culture and spirit of Ukraine with our community.”

Apparel featuring the Jets’ Ukrainian Heritage logo is available at all Jets Gear locations and online at truenorthshop.com, with additional merchandise set to launch before the holiday season and the January 2 game.

The Winnipeg Jets will host their inaugural Ukrainian Heritage Night against the Anaheim Ducks on January 2, 2025, at 7 p.m. The event will celebrate the cultural contributions of Manitoba’s Ukrainian community.
