Eleven months after capturing the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship on their home ice, Shaun Meachem, Kelly Schafer and Chris and Teejay Haichert from the Swift Current Curling Club are set to fly to Aberdeen, Scotland for the World Mixed Curling Championship.

“It’s been a long time, but it’s gone by really fast,” Meachem said. “It was nice to have some time to plan and get everything organized. We had excellent prep, our men’s teams had a couple of events in already this year, and we’ve been practicing. I think everybody’s feeling really good about their games right now and we’re looking forward to putting on a good performance over there.”

The Curling Club held a send-off for the team on Thursday after the Superleague games wrapped up, with local curlers and fans gathered to wish the team luck and sign a Canadian flag that the team will bring to Scotland to have on the ice for their games.

“I’ve never had the opportunity to represent our country before at any level, so this a big deal for me and my family,” Meachem added. “They’ve made a lot of sacrifices over the years so that I could go and curl and it’s pretty special. My daughter started curling now, and she’s playing competitively and hopefully will one day do the same.”

The World Mixed Curling Championship gets underway on October 11.
