Charges have been laid against two people from Calgary relating to the re-vinning of stolen vehicles.
On Sunday (Sept. 29), the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams' (ALERT) Auto Crimes unit arrested 36-year-old Darko Kolundzic and 39-year-old Viviana Tello after recovering three stolen vehicles.
Police found a motorhome and two high-end trucks estimated to be worth a combined $380,000, all of which were reported stolen from the Tsuut’ina Nation, Calgary, and Cochrane.
The re-vinning scheme functioned by exploiting Alberta's vehicle registration process, and Service Alberta is helping with the investigation.
Staff Sgt. Gordon MacDonald was quoted in a release from ALERT.
"By exploiting the system, these suspects were essentially hiding in plain sight. Organized and complex auto crimes such as these drive up insurance premiums for all Albertans."
The scheme was discovered after an innocent person was notified about driving offences from a vehicle that was fraudulently registered under their name.
Kolundzic and Tello were both charged with possession of property obtained by crime, uttering a forged document, and fraud.
