Our beloved mother, Doris Turner, passed away on October 2nd, 2024 in Saskatoon. Mom was born on the family farm north of Swift Current on April 20, 1931. Her parents were Fredrik and Mathilde Johnson who both emigrated from Norway and met in Saskatchewan where they farmed west of Leinan. Mom grew up on the home place along with her two sisters and four brothers, attended the nearby country school of Kilton Hill, and finished her high school in Swift Current. She then attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and taught school near Shaunavon and then at the Perone country school southwest of Kyle. There she met her future husband, Thomas Turner, and settled down on the old Lowe farm to raise their four children, Dale (Joy), Brian, Debbie (Wayne), and Wayne. Mom and Dad moved into the town of Kyle in 1979 and then into Swift Current in 1997. With her health beginning to fail, Mom moved to Saskatoon to live with her son, Wayne, from September of 2020 to March of 2024 where bouts of COVID and pneumonia required her to be moved into Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon where she passed. Mom was a writer and a poet and had poems published in the Western Producer. She also published a book of poems and stories called Singing Wings. Mom was very musical and gave guitar lessons for many years. She also played the electric guitar for the Swift Current Old Time Fiddlers and some small ensembles who often played in nursing homes. Mom was also an excellent baker and her homemade bread and buns gained a reputation in the community. Mom was predeceased by her husband, parents, and siblings, as well as two nephews and one niece. She leaves behind her four children, five grandchildren—Kyle (Jill), Ash, Davin, Danae, Jillaine (Tim), and six great grandchildren—Kennedy, Gray, Jack, Katie, Stella, and Turner.
There will be a graveside service at the Turner cemetery southwest of Kyle at 1pm on October 8th. There will be a reception in the Anglican Church basement at 2pm.
Many thanks to the nurses and aides at Stensrud Lodge for helping Mom out so much, especially Vanessa, Rahel, Carol, and Rachna. Donations in Mom's memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan.
