Airdrie has unveiled its updated 2024-25 Extreme Weather Plan, which will be presented at tomorrow's Community Safety and Social Services Standing Committee meeting.

The City of Airdrie developed this plan to protect vulnerable and unhoused residents during harsh weather events. Following extreme weather in December 2022 that displaced some residents, the city council recognized the need for a coordinated response. This led to establishing the Extreme Weather Emergency Response Fund for 2024.

Working with community service providers, the city found existing resources inadequate for supporting at-risk residents during severe weather. In response, the Extreme Weather Community Stakeholders’ Group (EWCSG) was formed in December 2023 to develop a comprehensive plan.

The updated plan covers extreme cold, heat warnings, and air quality alerts related to wildfire smoke. During the 2023-24 winter, Airdrie experienced two extreme cold events, prompting the city to open warming spaces at Genesis Place and the Airdrie Public Library. The plan aims to expand services, including after-hours warming spaces and increased outreach support.

The EWCSG, in partnership with the city, coordinates response efforts, prepares supplies, and reports on funding and outcomes each season. The city supports these efforts by monitoring weather conditions, providing financial resources through the emergency fund, and facilitating communication via social media.
