Thomas “Tom” Ernest Grisdale
October 22, 1934 – October 4, 2024
The death of Thomas “Tom” Ernest Grisdale of the Humboldt district occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Friday, October 4, 2024. He was 89 years of age. Affectionately known as Tom or Tommy, he was born on October 22, 1934, to Ronald and Ivy (née Pocock) Grisdale and was raised in the Glynfield, Saskatchewan district. He grew up alongside his brothers on the family grain farm where they raised a variety of animals. His poor mother had a lot to put up with as Tom, his brothers, and many friends in the area sure knew how to get into mischief. Tom attended the Glynfield school from 1940 to 1949, taking some of his grade nine by correspondence. He then quit school to help on the family farm and later in 1956, purchased land and started farming on his own. In the winter of 1956, Tom went to Vancouver, British Columbia to work in a dry-cleaning plant and in the winter of 1958, he worked at a bush camp in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. Tom was a confirmed bachelor until that fateful day in March 1973 at a broomball party where he met Eva Wiebe. They were married on November 3, 1973, and later had their only child, Rachel. Tom and Eva farmed in Glynfield until 2000 and moved to Humboldt in April 2001. Tom loved the outdoors. If he wasn’t fishing or hunting, he would be planning to go fishing or hunting. His favourite places to be were the fishing cabin at Armit Lake or in a goose pit at 7:00 a.m. watching the birds filter in. He was also an avid sportsman. He played or umped ball in the summer and curled in the winter. Later on he took up golf and bowling. Tom loved watching sports of all kinds, whether in person or on television. He watched his daughter compete whenever he could and when the grandchildren came, enjoyed attending all their events as well – throwing in his brand of coaching from the sidelines. Tom also enjoyed playing cards with his very good friends. No matter the reason, the get-together ended up with the cards on the table. Tom and Eva enjoyed many vacations together and spent 20 winters with friends in Yuma, Arizona, soaking up the warmth and partaking in the happy hours. Tom had a love of science and technology his whole life and donated his body to the University of Saskatchewan in order to help future doctors and nurses learn. Tom will be deeply missed and remembered forever by his wife of oh so close to 51 years, Eva; his daughter Rachel and son-in-law Kelly; their children Lorne (Nicole), Emma, and Kamryn; brothers: Gerry (Vivian), and Ron (Dawn); Eva’s siblings: Shirley, Albert (Carol), Bill (Bev); and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. He is predeceased by his parents Ronald and Ivy; and his brother-in-law Vic. The Funeral Service was held at Westminster United Church, Humboldt, on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Al Hingley. Tom’s daughter Rachel delivered the eulogy, and the memorial table attendants were Val Hultgreen and Judy Low. Memorial donations may be directed to the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation – Education Endowment Fund (P.O. Box 1740, Humboldt, SK, S0K 2A0).
