The provincial government is helping to recognize those who have stood out in the sports community.
The Alberta Sport Recognition Awards program is a provincial award that acknowledges the outstanding achievements and the commitments to the sport community in the province.
Due to the role sport and recreation plays in Albertans lives, the provincial government is honouring the accomplishments of those Alberta athletes who have either contributed to the sports community in the province or have an outstanding achievement themselves, as well as those who have helped the athletes to succeed.
"This year, we have witnessed our fellow Albertans achieve excellence in sport, and Alberta’s government is proud to celebrate this excellence through the Alberta Sport Recognition Awards. Their remarkable dedication to sport makes our province a better place to live, visit and play," explained the Minister of Tourism and Sport, Joseph Schow in a media release.
Sports and activity are known to teach healthy habits in people, as well as fundamental life skills, including teamwork, leadership, confidence, and commitment.
The Mayo Clinic also adds that there are numerous benefits to when children participate in sports.
On top of improving cardiovascular health and preventing obesity, playing sports helps youth to connect with other people and make friends.
This year's Alberta Sport Recognition Awards will be awarded in several categories:
- Junior Female and Male Athlete of the Year
- Junior Team of the Year
- Open Female and Male Athlete of the Year
- Open Team of the Year
- Coach and Technical Officials Recognition Award
- Sport Volunteer Award
Nominations will be open until January 15, 2025.
