Starting today, Albertans can book annual immunizations against respiratory viruses as the fall season approaches.

Eligible residents can schedule appointments through the Alberta Vaccine Booking System by calling Health Link at 811 or contacting local pharmacies directly. Health officials encourage individuals to consult their primary care providers for personalized advice on immunizations that best suit their needs and those of their families.

Appointments for COVID-19 and influenza immunizations can be booked now, with openings available to the general public starting October 15. Additionally, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) immunization appointments can be scheduled for availability beginning October 21.

Health Minister Adriana LaGrange emphasized preparing for the upcoming respiratory virus season.

"As fall approaches, it’s important to plan against circulating respiratory viruses. I strongly encourage everyone to consult with their local pharmacist, doctor, or health care provider to make informed decisions about their health and ensure they’re well-prepared for the season,” she stated.

Dr. Mark Joffe, the chief medical officer of health, highlighted the effectiveness of the vaccines, saying, "Adding an extra layer of protection this fall is the best way to guard against the illnesses that typically arise during the fall and winter months. The respiratory virus vaccines that will be offered this fall are specifically designed to offer a strong defence against the strains of these viruses that are expected to circulate this season."

In a new initiative this year, residents aged 60 and older living in continuing care homes and senior supportive living accommodations will have access to the publicly funded Abrysvo vaccine, which protects against RSV, through the Alberta Outreach Program. Additionally, seniors in the community aged 75 and older will have access to a limited supply of this vaccine, with options for those not eligible for the provincially funded program to purchase the vaccine.
