Airdrie's Homecoming Festival on Saturday was filled with family-friendly activities and plenty of football games for all of Airdrie to enjoy.

Chris Glass, the lead organizer for the festival and Head Coach for the George McDougall Mustangs is proud of how the day-long event went.

"We had almost 3000 people during the day, throughout all the games, the last two football games, the stands were packed, the music was playing, the food trucks were lined up. It was everything we wanted it to be."

This was the third annual festival. It originally started just after COVID-19 when the city received funds from the federal government for an outdoor festival to try and get people back into the community.

"It was supposed to be a one-time event in the fall, but it was such a nice experience we decided to keep it."

This was also the first homecoming festival on the brand-new artificial turf at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park.

"It was everything we wanted it to be, a perfect showcase of what having that new field could do for a community. It gives us a gathering place that's state of the art."

When it came to the football games during the festival, Airdrie had a great showing. The PeeWee team picked up a big win. The Airdrie atom teams played against each other while there was also a flag football showcase, mentioned Glass.

The final two games on the day-long slate showcased Airdrie's high school talent. W.H. Croxford picked up a big win against Chestermere 34-17, while George McDougall won the Airdrie Bowl against Bert Church 27-3.

Glass shared that the Airdrie Sports Council are already excited for next year and planning is already taking place.

Bert Church and Croxford will be facing off in the annual Turkey Bowl food drive to support the Airdrie Food Bank on Thursday (6 p.m. at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park) While George McDougall travels to Cochrane for the final regular season game of the Rocky View Schools football season.
