It's a question that has been on the mind of many in Weyburn...what exactly is going on at Weyburn's City Centre Mall?
A number of rumours have been circulating as of late, partially due to several businesses leaving the mall. The most recent business to shut its doors was the BMO branch in Weyburn.
The branch was originally scheduled to close in spring of 2025 but it's door abruptly shut on September 27th. Despite numerous attempts to get the full story from BMO, representatives have only said that they "continuously assess our operations to ensure that we are able to safely serve our customers with the products and services they need". This, along with the moved up timeline, have left many with more questions than answers.
Many have also wondered if the City of Weyburn will step in at some point or if they have plans for the mall.
According to Communications Coordinator for the City, Kyle Hertes, "The City is not involved in discussions regarding the mall, as it is privately owned."
Both the City and BMO suggested reaching out directly to the manager and/or owner of City Mall, which proved to be more difficult than originally expected.
Although getting direct word from anyone at City Centre Mall has proven challenging, we were able to confirm that most of the rumours circulating around the City, including rumours of mold and taxes in arrears, are not true.
All we really know for certain at this time is that the mall is currently for sale, as it has been for a number of years, and that no one seems certain what the future will hold for it.
