Over the weekend, over 40 Airdronians took part in palliative care training that was hosted by the Airdrie and District Hospice Society and run by Alberta Hospice Palliative Care.
Lise Blanchette, President and Administrator at the Airdrie and District Hospice Society, explained this is the second time they have hosted this kind of training.
"The goal for us was raising awareness and providing support for palliative care in our community."
Blanchette went on to explain what palliative care is.
"The training equips the participants with vital knowledge and skills to enhance patient's quality of life for those facing serious illnesses. If someone's palliative, it means they have a serious illness, they don't have an end-of-life diagnosis yet, but it can come."
"We had social workers, registered nurses, volunteers, healthcare workers, massage therapists, death doulas and just community members that are interested in palliative care."
Blanchette said communication is one of the most important pieces when it comes to palliative care.
"It is important to understand and address spiritual needs that the patient might want. It is also important to communicate with the family."
She capped off by saying if anybody has any questions about the society or palliative care to contact the society by emailing them at contact@airdriehospice.ca.
Blanchette also wanted to thank the Airdrie 1st Club for participating in the event and providing lunch.
In July, the society received a significant donation from the Business Club of Airdrie and Area 8th annual golf tournament. In total, they received around $11,500.
