Volleyball has been heating up in the southeast and the Estevan Comprehensive School is representing the community well. Over the weekend, the Elecs Intermediate Girls Volleyball Team dominated and took home first place against three teams in Radville.
Throughout the round-robin play, Estevan played against Weyburn, Carlyle and the home team in Radville, only losing one set. Once they moved on to the playoffs, the Elecs faced their rival Weyburn, who was in fourth place. Estevan won in two sets with a score of 25-10 and 25-16, respectively. This pushed them to the gold medal match, where they faced Carlyle. Carlyle lost with a score of 25-10 and 25-16 sets, with Estevan claiming first place in the tournament.
"We had a couple kids that had some good serving streaks. We had also our Captain step in. We had one of our girls was unable to make this tournament, so she stepped in for a position that she normally doesn't play on for our team. So that was really great. Lots of aces being served and we had a couple of really good hits," shared Kailey Barnstable, one of the coaches of the team.
Barnstable said that the team has meshed well throughout the season. "It's been really cool because we have a bunch of girls from different club teams that have kind of all come together. We have 10 girls on our team and we have a really good dynamic that's going on. They have improved a lot."
She added that the team has had a lot of opportunities to learn. The team hosted a tournament earlier in the season and competed in another held in Langham for seniors, where they placed first. "It's just been really cool watching how they've been growing in their skills and just their communication on [the] court with each other. They're they're starting to play like a real team."
The wins and the first-place finish gave the team a boost in confidence heading into a tournament in Balgonie next weekend, Barnstable expressed. The volleyball team is also competing in Swift Current near the end of October.
