Minister of Technology and Innovation Nate Glubish was in Airdrie Monday to talk to local business owners about technology and innovation.
According to Glubish, he was asked by Airdrie East MLA Angela Pitt to share what he does in his role for the province. He went on to share that he currently has two key focuses with his role:
- "We lead the government's efforts to apply more technology and innovation in everything we do so that we can deliver better, faster and smarter services to Albertans and also do so in a way that saves the taxpayer money."
- "We lead the government's efforts to make Alberta a destination of choice for innovators, inventors and investors who want to build new technologies."
Elaborating more on his first point, Glubish shared research they are doing to help stop wildfires sooner.
"We're doing some cool research right now with hyperspectral imaging satellite technology and some artificial intelligence researchers to better predict where forest fires are going to start, how fast they'll grow, and where there would be the most risk to property or to livelihood."
When asked about questions Airdronians brought forward to him, he shared that cybersecurity was an important topic.
"It's important for the government, but it's important for every business across Alberta, and the more we use technology in our day-to-day lives and our daily business dealings, the more we need to be prepared to protect ourselves, and so we talked a bit about our Cyber Alberta Initiative."
According to Glubish the initiative, which is run by the province's cybersecurity division allows them to share some of their knowledge like best practices and different threats they might be facing each month to business owners, non-profits or whoever wants to know more.
"Folks in Airdrie are proud to be from Airdrie. They're proud that Airdrie is the fastest growing city in Alberta. They're proud of the work that the community and the business community have done to build that momentum. They just want to make sure that the provincial government is aware of what they bring to the table."
Glubish thanked those who came out to listen to him talk and share information about what his ministry does. He also reaffirmed that the province would love to be partners with Airdrie to help the city reach its full potential.
"We love to work together, and we certainly see the successes that Airdrie has had, and we just want to see them reach their fullest potential, and we want to be partners in that."
