HWN Energy Ltd. has announced that the emergency response to a well control incident that injured five workers just north of Cochrane has been lifted.

According to an updated news release, "As of 7:30 p.m. on October 6, 2024, the emergency response was lifted. The AER and OHS have released the site back to HWN as of approximately 12:00 p.m. on October 7th, 2024. Additional repairs and remediation efforts will continue on the site in the near-term."

The company states that the incident started on September 30 at around 2:00 p.m., leading HWN to deploy industry experts and specialized equipment to safely regain control of the well.

"A well-control plan was developed and reviewed by regulatory agencies, allowing HWN to implement effective measures quickly. By the afternoon of October 1, the fire was extinguished, and control over the well was successfully established."

The company expressed that their thoughts are with the five injured contractor personnel and their families.

"Out of respect for their privacy, HWN will not be making any comment on their condition. We appreciate the quick response and support of local residents, AER, OHS and all first responders. We would also like to thank the Calgary oil and gas community for their offers of support and assistance during this time."

HWN stated this would be the last update regarding this incident unless new information becomes available.
