With Thanksgiving weekend temperatures hovering around the average range for this time of year and a balmy surprise on Monday, some residents may think of the dread 's' word - snow. When will it come and how much will there be?

According to Stephen Berg, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, 10 to 15 centimetres of snow usually falls in October.

"That doesn't mean that it's a lasting snowfall because chinook winds can suddenly come and just dissipate it all from the surface," he explained."You could probably expect about five to 10 centimetres of snow now."

Does this mean Airdrie could see an unexpected dump of snow? Berg said the next several days do not suggest this, though snowfall may occur further west of Airdrie, especially in the Rockies.

"It's hard to say beyond a week or two when the snowfall begins," he added.

For now, Airdronians can expect average temperatures for this time of year at the beginning of Thanksgiving weekend, though night-time lows are expected to be slightly below average.

"... But the overnight lows can be dipping down to minus eight tonight; that's actually about five or six degrees below the normal,"

However, Monday, the long weekend, is shaping up to be quite warm, several degrees above normal.

"The current forecast is 24, but that's approximately 10 to 12 degrees above normal for the Sunday and Monday. The overnight lows will be close to normal."
