Candlewick Productions is set to present Freud’s Last Session, a compelling two-person play running from October 18th to 20th at the Kenmor Theatre in Morden. The play imagines a hypothetical meeting between psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and author C.S. Lewis, blending history, philosophy, and British humor.

A hypothetical meeting of minds

The play setting takes place in September, 1939, just as World War II begins. Freud, nearing the end of his life, invites C.S. Lewis to his home for an intellectual confrontation. Freud, a staunch atheist, debates with Lewis, a former atheist who later converted to Christianity. “It’s a 'what if' scenario,” said actor Chuck Fefchak, who plays Lewis. "Whether the meeting actually happened isn’t confirmed, but it’s fascinating to imagine the conversation."

Starring Chuck Fefchak and Richard Klassen

In this production, Fefchak is joined by Richard Klassen, Candlewick’s executive producer, who portrays Freud. The two actors, who have worked together for nearly two decades, direct themselves through the intense, one-act play. “We’ve always wanted to take on a show with real substance, and this piece fits that perfectly,” Fefchak explained.

A departure from comedy

Candlewick Productions is known for its comedic works, but Freud’s Last Session marks a shift in tone. “This is a 'think piece'—it’s not a light comedy, but there are moments of humor, especially with Lewis’ British wit,” Fefchak shared. He emphasized that while the play is serious, it still provides moments of levity through sharp dialogue between the two historical figures.

Why you should see it

“This show has meat to it,” Fefchak noted. "It’s historical, thought-provoking, and has moments of humor intertwined with deep philosophical questions." Audience members can expect to be drawn into the intense 90-minute performance with no intermission. “By a third of the way in, we expect the audience will be leaning forward, fully invested in the conversation.”
