The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is inviting residents to visit their local fire halls today as part of an open house event, running from noon to 4 p.m.
Every WFPS station across the city will welcome visitors, offering a chance to meet first responders and learn essential fire safety tips. Attendees will gain valuable information on smoke alarms, home escape plans, and fire prevention strategies.
The open house marks the conclusion of Fire Prevention Week, which this year has focused on the theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you.” In a fire emergency, a working smoke alarm can buy you valuable time to escape safely, the WFPS says.
To help protect yourself and your loved ones, follow these fire safety steps:
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside all sleeping areas, and in your basement.
- Test smoke alarms every month by pressing the test button.
- Change the batteries at least once a year.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
“Having a working smoke alarm is the best way to ensure you and your family can escape in the event of a fire,” said Doug Sinclair, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service’s Public Education Coordinator. “You also need to have a plan in case the alarm goes off. Make sure everyone in your home knows what to do in the event of a fire, and practice your escape plan.”
The WFPS open house provides a great opportunity to learn more about fire safety while connecting with the first responders who serve the community.
