An Airdrie resident has been honoured at this year’s provincial Heritage Awards. Karen Copley won the Outstanding Achievement category, which recognizes individuals or organizations with at least 10 years of involvement in Alberta’s heritage sector.
This award celebrates those who show exceptional leadership and long-term dedication beyond their professional responsibilities.
Copley has been a pillar of the Nose Creek Valley Museum since its inception in 1988, dedicating herself as a long-time volunteer and serving as the museum’s Assistant Curator.
Her leadership in developing engaging school tours and educational outreach programs has effectively connected young learners with local history. Copley's passion for heritage is evident in her commitment to creating meaningful visitor experiences.
Continuously seeking innovative ways to present history, Copley ensures that the stories of the past resonate with today’s audiences. Her tireless efforts have made her an exemplary ambassador for Airdrie’s rich history, fostering a deeper appreciation of local heritage within the community.
Another local honoree, Shari Peyerl of Sundre, received the Heritage Awareness Award. Peyerl shares her experiences at Glenbow Ranch in her book, Alberta's Cornerstone: Archaeological Adventures in Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, published in 2022. The book explores the region's rich history, mainly focusing on sandstone quarrying and ranching.
This captivating work blends archaeology with documentary history, genealogy, and oral histories, complemented by historical photographs, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in Alberta's heritage.
The Alberta Heritage Awards recognize outstanding contributions to preserving and promoting Alberta's heritage. The awards are divided into several categories, including the Heritage Conservation Award, which acknowledges projects excelling in conserving historic resources, and the Heritage Awareness Award, which highlights research and public engagement initiatives.
The 2024 Heritage Awards recipients were celebrated at a ceremony on September 26 at the Queen Elizabeth II Building in Edmonton.
