Two days of free youth basketball clinics over the Thanksgiving weekend have become one of the maiden initiatives of the recently formed Fil-Can Hoops and Beyond nonprofit organization.

While it's the fourth time the Filipino Canadian Association of Cochrane Alberta and Sunday Hoops have collaborated to offer the clinic, Fil-Can is cutting its teeth in promoting physical activity for youth and adults.

Open to all youth ages 7 to 16, the clinic included training in passing, stationary shots, ball handling and fundamentals of the sport lead by former professional player Andy De Guzman's Tamaraws Basketball Academy.

"I've been doing this for 14 years after my professional career in the Philippines," says De Guzman. "We try the kids the fundamentals of basketball, so they can pass it on."

"Fil-Can Hoops and Beyond has recently registered as a nonprofit organization aimed to promote sports for youth and adults as well," explains Edwin Aguanta, the organization's secretary. "We are really promoting physical activities for the kids right now and hopefully we can have some leagues, competitions and sporting events not only for the youth but also for adults here in Cochrane and nearby towns."
