Rocky View County Council has voted to send a letter of support to Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC) for a proposed speed limit change on Highway 2A.
The decision supports combining the 100 km/h and 80 km/h speed zones into a continuous 80 km/h limit from the Highway 2/2A/72 interchange to Crossfield’s boundary, aiming to simplify speed limits and enhance safety.
Background and proposed changes
In 2023, the Town of Crossfield highlighted safety concerns over the current multiple speed zones, which range from 60 km/h to 100 km/h and caused confusion for drivers. ATEC recommended consolidating these into a consistent 80 km/h limit. The 60 km/h zone over the Highway 2 interchange will remain due to visibility and safety requirements.
Local and regional support
In March 2024, Crossfield passed a motion to support the 80 km/h limit but requested maintaining the 70 km/h zone within the town boundaries. ATEC is ready to implement the changes once both councils provide letters of support. The department will handle signage updates at no cost to Crossfield or Rocky View County.
Road safety and community impact
The speed reduction aims to improve safety, particularly at the Dickson Stevenson Road intersection, a frequent accident site. Further analysis will determine if additional measures are needed.
