A new educational agreement is going to help students at local Catholic schools learn more about Métis history and culture.

Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools in Okotoks have recently announced a new educational services agreement with the Rupertsland Institute, which will be a part of their 2024-2025 learning plan.

Through this partnership, it will help to deepen the understanding of Métis history and culture, as well as strengthen Indigenous education throughout the Catholic schools.

This collaboration between Christ the Redeemer and the Rupertsland Institute helps to recognize the importance of reconciliation and cultural awareness, and they will focus on creating resources and professional learning opportunities for both students and educators.

Over half of the Indigenous students at the Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools identify as Métis, this agreement ensures that every student feels seen, supported, and connected to their heritage.

"Our goal is not just to build resources but to empower every child to stand taller in who they are," explained Jacealyn Hempel, Director of Learning at CTR Catholic, in a media release. "Through this partnership, we are committed to fostering an environment where all students can embrace their identities with pride and confidence, ultimately enabling them to make a meaningful difference in the world."

As part of this initiative, they will be promoting the significance of Métis land and cultural knowledge.

Hempel adds that every member of the community plays a vital role in building these relationships and nurturing a greater sense of belonging.

"Together with Rupertsland Centre, we are dedicated to creating a vibrant educational environment that celebrates Indigenous cultures and strengthens connections among students, families, and communities," said Hempel.
