Last week the annual football game between W.H. Croxford and Bert Church wasn't just about the game, it was also about the Airdrie Food Bank.
During the matchup, the two booster clubs host an event called "Cram the Ram," which allows the fan bases to donate food and cash to the food bank.
Airdrie Dodge provided two Ram trucks for fans to fill with non-perishable food donations. Cash contributions were also accepted.
Jennifer Thompson, the President of the Chargers Football Booster Club, talked about how the event went.
"The Cavaliers did win the game (27-13), but the Chargers won the food drive."
A total of 1,400 pounds of food was donated during the game, there was also $2,162 in cash and online donations. Thompson also talked about how it has grown over the past few years.
"In the last three years, since I started keeping track, our cash and online donations have quadrupled, and our food donations have almost doubled."
In 2022, 828 pounds of food and $560 in cash were donated, while in 2023, 900 pounds of food and $1350 in cash and online funds were donated.
Thompson went on to talk about why this event is important to have in Airdrie.
"To see how we can come together as a community of parents, supporters and students, and see how we can both support a common cause through our friendship is great."
She finished off by thanking every who has helped grow the numbers over the years and helping the food bank in a time of need for lots of families is special.
Rocky View Schools football playoffs kick off Friday, with all three Airdrie schools in "A" playoffs. Bert Church will be travelling to Cochrane Friday night while Saturday W.H. Croxford And George McDougall go head to head at 6 p.m. at Ed Eggerer Field.
