The Weyburn Comprehensive School participated in a Walk for Wenjack yesterday to help raise awareness about the history of Residential Schools. This was done on day one of Secret Path Week commemorating the legacies of Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack.

According to the Downie and Wenjack Fund website, Chanie Wenjack was a nine-year-old Anishinaabe boy who was sent to a Residential School over 600 kilometres away from his home and family. He ran away from the school in an attempt to reunite with his family, he was found deceased a week later due to starvation and exposure.

Gord Downie was the lead singer for the band The Tragically Hip. He wrote and released an album entitled “The Secret Path” after hearing the story of Chanie Wenjack and moved on to become an active advocate for reconciliation in Canada.

The WCS students walked around the Southeast College campus and around the track before returning to the school. Find more information on the Downie and Wenjack Fund HERE.
