Soccer star and Winnipeg native Desiree Scott is calling it quits.
Scott announced via a video on social media on Thursday that she plans to retire from the National Women's Soccer League at the end of this season.
"It is bittersweet to think about this moment, but I know that the timing is right. Your girl is tired," said Scott. "I also know in my heart of hearts, that I am at peace with this decision. I've given so much to the game over the last 20-plus years and it has given me so much back in return."
The 37-year-old started her professional soccer career in 2013 with FC Kansas City, where she also plans to play her last game.
"It has been an absolute pleasure to play for the city. To play for this organization. To play for the best fans in the NWSO."
In 2021, Scott, who earned the nickname Destroyer, helped the Canadian women's soccer team win Gold at the Tokyo Olympics. This was not the first time Scott was part of a medaling team. She was also there when they won bronze in 2012 in London and 2016 in Rio.
"I am proud of the career I've had. All that I've accomplished. The highest of highs and the lowest of lows," said Scott. "This sport has made me the person I am today. I'm gonna miss this game, guys."
A recent knee injury kept Scott off the field for the 2023 season, only returning in March 2024. Meanwhile, the last time she played for Canada was this past summer when she took on Mexico in Montreal and Toronto in a pair of friendlies in June.
It's been an absolute journey. I've loved this game since I was eight years old, and I'm not going to be too far away from it," said Scott. "Let's finish off this season with a bang."
